A wonderful specimen of Ziziphus spina-christi provides shade and visual relief in Al Karama.
This street tree in Al Karama, Dubai, caught my eye. The tree species is locally known as the “Sidr Tree”. It’s botanical name is Ziziphus spina-christi. While this species is indigenous to the region it is rarely seen as street tree plantings in Dubai.
Who would expect a fresh water ecosystem on the outskirts of Dubai?!
Warsan Lake is a rare geographic feature. Reeds grow along the water’s edge. Many birds come here to feed and rest. The lake appears natural — perplexing given the extreme water scarcity of the region.
The secret to survival for Warsan Lake is the nearby sewerage treatment plant! The lake receives overflow from the Al Awir plant. The lake’s ecosystem recycles nutrients to keep the lake healthy.
